Character of the Universe (Chapter Three

I make a distinction between purpose and character in that a purpose has a human intention behind it while a character is a natural tendency of something. A tree does not have a purpose but has a character which is to live and grow. The main driving characteristic is a movement from high order and low distribution to low order and wide distribution. This is called entropy.

An excerpt: Ever since the Big Bang, nearly everything in the universe has moved steadily away from a state of incredibly high order and extremely low distribution. This movement of order to disorder and from dense to disseminated over time is called entropy and it is a very significant characteristic of the universe and everything in it. Entropy is the natural dispersal of any concentrated energy toward equilibrium. It started with the Big Bang and has never ceased.
